It’s amazing how many times the word “balance” comes up in my life these days. Balancing contracts, balancing time with each child, balancing the budget – to name a few.
Balancing our household budget is high on my list of priorities right now. My husband and I have never taken “the easy road”. We prefer the road less travelled but unfortunately that hasn’t been the road to financial freedom. Consequently, we are frugal. That’s the best word I can come up with. My children probably have many other, less kind, words – their best ones coming right after I’ve said (again), “Not today, there’s no money for [toys, games, ice cream, insert anything here] today”.
So, in an effort to find a bit of money where there wasn’t any before, I thought I’d try out an app that appeared in my Facebook news feed. I should start by saying that I have not been paid to endorse this product, I simply appreciate what they do and wanted to share it with you. Checkout 51 is a Canadian app that offers a selection of discounts that are valid for one week. The discounts range from about $0.50 to $2.00 per product and are completely separate from any other coupon or sale. That means that we can essentially take advantage of a “double coupon” which is something, as Canadians, we’re not used to. You scan your receipt with your iPhone and it’s uploaded immediately. Once the receipt is processed the total discount for all the offers you redeemed is applied to your account. Once you’ve reached $20 you request a cheque. I was skeptical at first but I accumulated the $20 within about 4 weeks, submitted my request for payment and happily opened an envelope with a cheque for $20.75 about 2-3 weeks later. What a simple way to help offset the very high cost of groceries.
Balancing a household budget is never easy. Checkout 51 is one of those little things that can help that balancing act.
